A lot of 2-3 star players choose to walk-on at their childhood dream-school, that means more to them than getting a partial scholarship to a smaller school. Until a few years ago, walk-on players, even ones that played in games, could not eat in the teams dining facility (the rule changes a few years back). You have a student who is paying their way through school, 25 hours of organized team-related activities, classes, and non-organized team activities. They are not allowed to make one cent off of their name. They couldn’t make a deal to sign autographs at a local restaurant in exchange for a free meal. Before you say “athletes are paid in scholarships”, not all athletes are.
