July 22nd marks the birthday of James Whale, the man we have to thank for Boris Karloff. His horror films are timeless subversive masterpieces. The whale was one of Hollywood’s greatest auteurs as his films were showcases of his dry wit and subversive attitudes towards 1930’s societal norms.
